Though he can barely afford even one candy bar, fate intervenes, and Charlie finds the last golden ticket. Joined at the gates by a group of despicable brats named Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Augustus Gloop, and Mike Teavee, Charlie and his Grandfather (David Kelly) venture inside proprietor Willy Wonka's (Johnny Depp) delightful factory for a wild adventure. Each room is a feast for the eyes, and more importantly the taste buds--a sugarcoated dreamland where everything is edible. One by one, however, the children meet unfortunate fates, until only Charlie remains in the company of Wonka and his curiously small workers, the Oompa Loompas (all played by Deep Roy, whose image is multiplied with CG). Sporting a severe bob, and talking in a high-pitched voice, Depp makes his Wonka even weirder than Wilder's. While Burton adds some amusing contemporary touches (like the musical Oompa Loompa routines), and an elaborate back story, he also preserves the charm of the original book. Overall, Burton's visual innovation succeeds in capturing the vividness of a child's imagination--but whether this version trumps the beloved '71 film is for viewers to decide. Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryI did not see it and do not plan to see it. It sounds like a sick movie. I know a lot of people like this sort of thing, but I just don't get it... slasher, people being sawed or cut or killed. I have seen a lot in my job and do not wish to see the Hollywood version.

Kinda StrangeJohnny Depp is kinda weird in this movie and I don't think that it's a great movie in my opinion.This is a very strange cast for a movie with such hype surrounding Johnny Depp and why can't it be like the book which I have read several times.

Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryThis movie is original and greusome. I like the sequel better, but this is still great in its own rite. I've seen it 4 or 5 times and it kept my interest every time.

Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryInteresting remake but to me as good as Johnny Depp was, Gene Wilder will always be Willy Wonka. They hipped the oompas (sp) up a little and only used one guy to play them all! You see the darker side of Wonka and his childhood in this version and it was good, but I will always like the origanal better.

Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryHave some of these people actually read Charlie and the chocolate factory? Willy Wonka is a weirdo, the book is a dark fairy tale for goodness sake. Johnny Depp's version is far nearer the original than Gene Wilder's, the description of Willy Wonka in the book also fits the Johnny Depp version more accurately and in my opinion is an improvement. Johnny always does things his way, he does not copy...
