Descripción

A breathtakingly photographed, epic western like none produced for decades, HIDALGO recounts the life of legend Frank T. Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen). Set in the 1800s, this family film chronicles the triumphant victory won by Frank and his mustang Hidalgo in the Ocean of Fire, an often-fatal competition in which the best riders and thoroughbreds race across Middle Eastern deserts. For Frank, who is known in the west for his prowess as a Pony Express rider and the winner of long-distance horse races, the lure of the Ocean of Fire is not only the $100,000 purse but also the clear challenge--both of which prove irresistible, and inspire him to travel across the world for this life-altering experience. With sweeping landscapes that evoke John Ford westerns like STAGECOACH and THE SEARCHERS, HIDALGO features enough racing, rivalry, and romance to befit any action film. But the race also provides a vehicle for the story of Frank forgiving himself for his participation in the Wounded Knee slaughter and accepting his part-Indian ancestry. The film's message, highlighted in a particularly moving scene where Frank invokes the spirits of his Native American ancestors, is that the key to happiness is accepting yourself as you are.

I was as impressed with this movie as I was hoping to be. We don't have enough movies with substance anymore, it's all about who can swear the most, or get the most loving, or blow up the most. This was a film that I have no trouble letting the kids watch.

My comment is only involving the role of Omar Al Sharif - i think it made a "Good" Impression in terms of describing the arabs and the way they think coz the previous movies are actually describing the arabs as valgures and mostly idiots - the arabic language was clear unlike the other movies when they actually using some sort of a weird accent and it has nothing to do with the arabic language -...

Eh. Loaded with glaringly obvious "moral of the story" moments, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. The value of mixed breeds/races, the companionship between man and animal, yeah, pretty run-of-the-mill stuff here. It might have been based on the autobiography of Frank Hopkins, but it seemed to stretch too much, try too hard. Had its moments, but that's about it.

The race was pretty cool, but I fell asleep at the end. Why did he let the horse go? I would've kept it to win more races and get more money. Poor greedy me!

Nothing special. It seemed that they had two or three cinematographers working on this because styles changed dramatically and for no apparent reason several times. Mortensen is pretty good, the rest of the cast are Mark I Hollywood Arabs, and there is far too much reliance on digital enhancements. A reasonable, although not highly imaginative script saves it from falling below average.
