Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: Graphics hold up pretty well, killer story, excellent marine AI.

Puntos Débiles: Suprisingly system killing, a bit short, hallway levels get extremely boring.

One of the most legendary gaming titles has come home to the PC, finally. Halo is one of those games that everybody talks about in hushed tones and I have no doubt that some people have shrines to the Master Chief in their closets. Much like Star Wars, pretty much nobody can approach this game with an objective attitude anymore. What the hell, I'll try anyway.

Graphics: For an engine that is pushing 4 years old, the graphics of Halo are still pretty strong. There is a certain sense of lushness to the outdoor environments that helps sell the illusion. In addition, the weapon and lighting effects are still top notch. The animations of all characters are strong, despite the lack of ragdoll physics, and the game is full of little touches that make you smile, like the brake lights of a vehicle popping on when you slam on the peddle. On the flipside, for a four year old game it is unusually demanding on even modern PC hardware. Gearbox software has obviously upgraded the engine slightly for PC release, but there is no apparent reason why it should cause frame rate stuttering on a system roughly three times as powerful as an Xbox.

Sound: Everybody knows the sound of Halo's music, and it is so impressive that the rest of the audio really doesn't come anywhere near the impact. Sure, the sound effects are well done and pack a good bass punch, but they can't hold a candle to that main theme.

Gameplay: A mix of the brilliant and downright boring. The early levels, with their wide vistas and battles, are fun and still give a charge even in the era of Far Cry and Call of Duty. It is here that you get to drive the infamous warthog, or fight alongside a dozen highly intelligent marines that act and react like humans, or fly the Covenant banshee and strafe squealing aliens on the ground. However, once you hit the halfway point and a major plot element occurs, the gameplay alarmingly downshifts into mindless look alike hallways and repetitive action (the library level, in particular, is a serious chore to play). Thankfully, a killer final level of total chaos redeems the game, and the last section where you race across the surface of an exploding ship is one of the most entertaining levels in any game, anywhere.

Storyline: This is where the game, and developer Bungie, excel. There is a rich background to all the happenings here, and all the levels (despite there sometimes dull play) exist to serve this story. While Halo 2 dived further into the relationship (or lack thereof) between the Covenant and Earth, the lack of a 'big picture' in this installment works better, IMHO. In this Halo, the Covenant are dangerous and the mystery surrounding their interest in Halo and their lack of overall motives fuels the story.

Overall: Halo is a very strong game, and definitely earns a place in the top 50. It isn't perfect, though, with it's frustratingly repetitive middle half and overall short length. However, the game packs enough strong sections to overcome these defects, and the overall result is a solid FPS.

Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: Great detail.

Puntos Débiles: Need a fairly good system to run at high res.

Love it. The new multiplayer maps are awsome. Same great story line as XBOX version. Online gameplay is great. Also, I'm not sure about you alone... But I have a Radeon 9600 pro, Athlon 2700+ and 512mb pc2700, and I run this game at 1024x764x32x85 and it runs great!

Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: This game is a classic, full of constant action and very fun to explore the wonderful levels, many features.

Puntos Débiles: If there is any weaknesses, it is that person who gave this game a bad review because he is an Xbox fanatic.

This game has wonderful graphics, and many different foes to kill. There are many vehicles and a vast sum of weaponry, and this game is very fun. I mean; how fun is it to run over vast amounts of aliens with a car? how fun is it to punch an alien in the face? You know how fun it can be, this game is a classic, and I believe the only game that surpasses it is it's soon-to-come sequal, Halo 2.

Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: huge worldscapes, beautiful maps, good gameplay, and good weapons.

Puntos Débiles: no save-anywhere feature.

I'd like to say something to alone. Alone, you may not have your graphics resolutions turned up. You may want to change your video settings in game to the highest possible supported by your video card. THEN, you can rate this game. Otherwise, don't say it sucks, and that the XBOX version is better, because you haven't fully tested the game to its full extent.

Any-Hoo. I love this game. I've been waiting for it to come out for pc since i first saw it for XBox (just like the rest of the pc gaming community).

Great Site. L8ter

Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: most of the game

Puntos Débiles: needs a good computer to play nicely

Overall, it is a wonderful game, and don't listen to the Xbox lover, this is much better than the xbox version (i played it before) and if you have a fairly new computer(didnt run as nice on my old computer), its the game you would want in your collection.
It runs well with me, i use Nvidia Geforce Ti 4600
P4 2.66 MHz,everything works well.

good luck in legendary level

Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: Good plot, good detail, vehicles, good (standard) FPS

Puntos Débiles: Lots of "been there done that", check point only save, System requirements, enemy AI

Halo is more of the standard FPS fare, though excellent executed! It feels strangely familiar and doesn't seem too far from Unreal II or UT2003 in many features. (The major difference are the vehicles that 'only' Halo has, but UT2004 may catch up soon.) If you already own the XBox version, too little difference may not justify the $50 investment.

Do I recommend this game? Well, if your rig is powerful enough you should consider it as an instant classic in your library, mostly due to the fame that preceeds an excellent FPS. Specials for around $40 make it a little bit easier to swallow. However, if you're planning on getting Halflife2 and / or Tron2.0 or already own Unreal 2 and UT2003, Halo may not be soooo essential.

Heck, if you're ready to get Halo don't wait much longer. It's good, in fact it is as excellent as most people will tell you. It may just not be the Ueber-game that you might expect from all that hype. The XBox king is probably more of a PC prince ...

Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: gameplay, graphics, multiplay

Puntos Débiles: BSOD at times, needs uber-system to enjoy all graphical glory

This game kicks x-box a$$! I played the x-box version for quite some time and that controller SUCKS! Carpal tunnel syndrome hurts. You x-box girls can keep your x-box and your carpal tunnel. Now it's another three years wait for Halo 2 to hit the PC. Halo is also much easier to hack on the PC and it comes with more multiplayer maps and weapons. I just need to upgrade my system, but heck I always need a good excuse to do that anyway.

Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved

Puntos Fuertes: Graphics, Sound, Ambience, Enviornment, Enemy AI, Difficulty, Multiplayer, Storyline, Characters, 3D Rendered Sounds, and Non-Stop Adrenaline Pumping Action!

Puntos Débiles: Anything under a 128mb video card and I would be in the car on the way to upgrade it pretty quickly. Anyone who dosen't play Halo is a very misfortunate person.

Halo: Combat Evolved
(Halo 2 Slightly Mentioned)
---------------------
Argueably the best game ever created.
Not only is Halo music identifiable in a split second by players but is graphically superior to ANY game in the competition upon its release. I speak from experience, for I not only own Halo for the Computer but Halo for the XBOX. And yes, I am an XBOX fanatic, Not to mention a Halo 2 fanatic! But getting back to Halo. For only $50, you can emplore your fingers on a journey, I've owned Halo for the plus side of FOUR YEARS and STILL play it reguarly. Its simple, only three words are needed to describe this game.
1 2 3
Its That Good

For XBOX-LiVe Players
Zerg1ing is my Gamer-tag.

Well I have a NVidia 5700 128oc Mb graphics card and before i had this i had a 440mx NVidia graphics card, i liked the grapihics on it but i like the graphics on my new one now. Some of the features on my new card i dont like playing with halo like the night vision its better with a 64mb graphics card and i would have to say that you should have a good system to play halo on your comp.... well i think halo is the best if you have the HMT tool to change stuff around in halo. i like the graphics alot better than xbox! (xbox sucks!!) and xbox controlers suck alot i like keyboard and mouse better. i would rate this game a high score!!!!!

Halo: Combat Evolved PC - Excellent buy

Puntos Fuertes: Good AI, great environment with good story line than naturally brings in new AI to fight, a consuming game.

Puntos Débiles: Would like to be able to "Save" more often, possibly. Hard to complain, a great game

I was immediately caught up in the story line, which continued to evolve, keeping one's interest and keeping the game fresh. The AI was pretty good, graphics pretty good, and the action challenging but surmountable. Lots of fun.

Halo: Combat Evolved

I held off on purchasing an Xbox, afraid that it was just some passing phase Microsoft had unleashed upon the world. But it caused me to miss out on many of the great hits of our time, including HALO. In fact, it has been the most successful Xbox game ever, selling over three million copies. Granted, this little “I won’t succumb to the powers of Xbox” charade didn’t last long, and I...

Halo Combat Evolved

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last two years, you've already heard about Halo: Combat Evolved. Easily one of the best launch titles for any console and still one of the best games available for the Xbox, it's a game that transcended the market. Though it hasn't quite enjoyed the same visibility in the public consciousness as titles like Grand Theft Auto or The Sims, Halo is,...

Halo Combat Evolved

IF YOU READ our 25 Most Overrated Games Of All Time feature a few weeks ago, you know that many of us at GameSpy HQ felt Halo -- while a great game -- wasn't quite as perfect as other critics made it out to be. When I reviewed the Xbox version in late 2001, I couldn't shake the nagging feeling there was still lots of room for improvement, whether it was due to the gamepad controls , the lack of...
