WD 200GB EIDE Ultra ATA-100 w/8MB Cache 7200RPM...

Puntos Fuertes: Big, cheap, fast.

Puntos Débiles: EIDE interface.

I bought this item at $195 + S&H. At that price, it's less than $1/GB, which is great. At 7200rpm with an 8MB cache (the feature that makes it "Special"), it's also as fast an EIDE hard drive as you'll find. I've also had good luck with Western Digital. Be forewarned that hard drive manufacturers define one gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes, whereas everyone else defines one gigabyte as 1,073,741,824 bytes (1kB = 1,024 bytes, 1MB = 1,024 kB, and 1GB = 1,024 MB). This means that this drive's actual capacity is about 186GB, which is still quite hefty.

WD 200GB EIDE Ultra ATA-100 w/8MB Cache 7200RPM...

Puntos Fuertes: capacity, good speed. wish i could do SATA though as I'm a gamer.

Puntos Débiles: none

I've never had any problems with a Western Digital HD. I have owned 3 or more without any hiccups and would definitely buy one again.

WD 200GB EIDE Ultra ATA-100 w/8MB Cache 7200RPM...

Puntos Fuertes: Insainly fast, monster capacity, 8MB Cache, 7200rpm.

Puntos Débiles: There's no enough PCI bus bandwith for this baby.

I just bough two of these baby's and connected them in a RAID 0 configuration. So i have a 400 GB hard drive with a read performance of about 110 MB/s, and a write performance of about 100 MB/s. Assuming that the PCI bus bandwith is about 266 MB/s, and it's shared with the rest of the PCI devices, i believe that the PCI bus is a limiting factor here. This is just the fastest Hard Drive ever, it beats the hell out of any SCSI-10000 rpm drive. Why would you buy an expensive-low capacity SCSI drive while you can get as much performance and much more capacity with a Western Digital 2000JB at the same price.

WD 200GB EIDE Ultra ATA-100 w/8MB Cache 7200RPM...

Puntos Fuertes: Inexpensive, Large Capicity

Puntos Débiles: Unreliable

I have had 2 in the last 6 months. The first one died after 1 week, just enough time to load windows start using it. I though it was a fluke so I returned it for another one. The second one lasted 4 month. Both times they were total mechanical failures. No files were recoverable without sending them into a service. Save your money and time and get a better quality drive.

WD 200GB EIDE Ultra ATA-100 w/8MB Cache 7200RPM...

Puntos Fuertes: Fast, big, reliable, mild heat, low noise

Puntos Débiles: None

These drives rock! I bought two of them a year ago and have been running them in RAID 0 with a PCI ATA/133 RAID generic controller,(which uses the Silicon Image 0680 chipset). The controller was purchased from Ebay for about $35! Note that the Silicon Image RAID chipset is the same one used by ASUS for their high-end A7N8X-Deluxe motherboard.

I have been afraid of this RAID-0 configuration, waiting for data to get lost or the RAID setup to crash and screw up my Windows install or something, but not a single hiccup for a year! Actually, a few times one of the disks failed to be recognized at startup and the Sil BIOS msg tells you that it only sees one of the two RAID drives. I tracked it down (i think) to a weak power supply (300 Watts in a system with a lot of cards, 4 drives, GeForce 4400 vid card, overclocked CPU, etc.) ... but since I changed to a 500W allied power supply I think everything has been getting enough juice.

I know the new SATA drives are faster but the capacity is not here yet so i'm going to hang on to these as they work great and are quiet. It is good to have a fan blowing on them if you want to keep your overall case heat down but is not really necessary.

For comparison, i have a Seagate Barracuda 80GB w/2MB cache, and together these drives are about twice as fast. I get about 370GB of usable storage out of 400. I run these drives HARD because their partitions get defragged every couple of days to optimize performance. Can't go wrong with these!

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE!

Puntos Fuertes: Cheap, but read weaknesses

Puntos Débiles: This drive WILL fail within a year or so.

As a 20 year veteran of the IT industry, I have always recommended that people buy Western Digital drives. I had NEVER had a problem with one until the WD2000JB drive. I have now had 100% failure on these drives--my 3rd of 3 that I purchased has now died.

The store that I bought these from agrees that there is a serious problem with these drives.

WD 200GB EIDE Ultra ATA-100 w/8MB Cache 7200RPM...

Puntos Fuertes: Fast i guess

Puntos Débiles: unreliable, crashed many times, bad sector, unrecovered error

I been using this hard drive for about 2-3 months now, 1 time all of a sudden it crash and delete all my files, then i thought it was just bad luck.. so kept on using it... then when i used up like 160gb then it crashed again.. couldn't read some folders/files... My advice is to buy MAXTOR, the only reliable hard drive and is worth the money... I've been using my Maxtor for like 5 years and couting now.. Stay away from WD... You will get what you paid for...

I tried Maxtor on 3 of my boxes, out of 6 drives 3 died. As far as I'm concerned Maxtor is crap, all I use now is Western digital and seagate.Never had a problem out of either one of these brands.I will never buy a Maxtor again.

I have been using two of these drives in RAID-0, a risky configuration, for 3 years now without a hiccup! And my machine runs night and day - very busy. How is that for reliable??

People can say what they want about WD - maybe they shipped a bad batch of drives - but my pair of WD2000JB have been great!
