Does the Job

Puntos Fuertes: Small, Asthetically appealling, Easy Install

Puntos Débiles: Seems Slow, Not Fully Vista Compatible

I like that this does what I bought it to do and that's backup my files, but as far as the other things it's supposed to do, it doesn't seem to work well with Vista. It seemed hard to pick the files I wanted to backup and it was very slow at backing them up. Also, Vista blocks something in the software. I don't know if it affects performance or not. Sometimes it has files waiting to backup but I can't figure out how to get them cleared out. I finally got all my files backed up and just unplugged it. It was causing start up errors, also.

My Book 500GB

Puntos Fuertes: Fast and reliable, 3 connection choices

Puntos Débiles: Not many extras or software included, no on/off switch

The Western Digital My Book external drives are excellent choices for backup or adding more storage space. Works with both PC and Mac, and has very good value and reliability for the price. I've been using two of these and would definately buy again. My only real complaint is the lack of a solid-state on/off switch, which basically means that the only way to have the drive not turn on with the computer is to disconnect it before startup. A minor annoyance, but otherwise an excellent product.

Not so bad

Puntos Fuertes: It can work under three different protocols: USB, FireWire and eSATA and I have paid only 25 dollars more than for Hard Drive working under USB only

Puntos Débiles: If it is designed to work under three protocols, all cabels should be included. Actually, I was very upset to find 6 pin FireWire cable because my laptop has 4 pin port.

There is not so bad choice. After you bought all necessary cables (eSATA and FireWire 4 pin cable or adapter) you can attach it to almost any computer. It is not so heavy, so you can bring it anywhere. It has very nice shape: Just put it on your bookshelf among books or buy several of them and put them together.

It's Good...Really

Puntos Fuertes: Cool Running, Quiet. Three interfaces to choose from. Real SATA drive inside.

Puntos Débiles: Pitiful back up software. No eSata cable. (No one includes one, though)

So, you want an external hard drive for backups of all those pictures on your computer, your daughter wants to transfer her iTunes library from her Macbook to her PC laptop and your wife thinks that all of your financial records should be backed up every week. If you want to do all of that, this WD package may be for you.

I've been using this drive for a couple of weeks and I have to say that I've been able to do all of the things I just mentioned without a problem. The drive itself is nice and quiet. I run it through firewire on my desktop machine, and my daughters MacBook and USB through her laptop and my wife's laptop. All smooth sailing. What I haven't done though is use the back up software that comes with the drive for more than automated back ups of my wife's financial book keeping files. They don't amount to much more than a couple of megabytes. Everything else has been done by the old drag and drop method.

The drive itself is stellar. It runs quietly and takes up practically no room. The problems that some people seem to be having is with the WD Anywhere backup software. That may or may not be the problem but it has worked just fine for me. It's a good drive for the money and you won't be sorry if you get it. It's fast fast fast fast fast and quiet. USB speed is fine, firewire is better, just like you'd expect. Get it and you won't be sorry.

Great External drive

Puntos Fuertes: 3 interfaces, smart power support, 3 year warranty, included USB and Firewire cables

Puntos Débiles: Little bulky, Very little documentation and no CD in the box, no eSATA cable

Overall I am happy with this drive. It has three interfaces, Firewire (1394), USB and eSATA, which is really nice since I can use one of the extra Firewire port to access the drive now.

In my observations and quick search on internet, I have found that Firewire interface actually is faster then USB. So, that's what I am using. eSATA would be the fastest but I don't have that interface on my old PC.

One complain I would have is that there are no CDs in the box, all of the SW is on the harddrive but it does come with tool to copy them to internal drive for future use.

The backup SW came with one "key" but it took me a while and research on internet to locate the key. The key was on the "quick guide" which was include in the box. At one of the corner you will find the key to enter.

The backup SW is good but I wished it had some way to set duration between each file backups. Currently as soon as you modify anything in the backed up directory it start to copy on the external drive. This does backup everything "real time" but I would prefer backups every hour or similar durations.

The drive is quiet. It did came formated in FAT32. I reformatted to NTFS using Windows XP. This allowed me to store files bigger than 4G which I had some (videos).

This drive did come with 3 year warranty.

Not For Dish Network DVR Back-up

Puntos Fuertes: Compact foot print, reasonable cost

Puntos Débiles: Freezes up on playback of DVR material

I purchased this drive specifically to back-up high definition recordings stored on my Dish Network ViP 622 HD DVR. I had no problem transferring and storing the recordings to the Home Book hard drive, but the movies would freeze on playback, often for 2-3 minutes at a time. In order to watch a stored movie I had to transfer it back to the DVR. With HD movies averaging 8-10 Gb in size that's a 40-60 minute process. WD told me the drive was designed for computer storage, not DVR back-up. Dish Network was even less helpful.

This 500 Gb model has USB 2.0, Firewire and SATA connectivity, but I couldn't in good conscience recommend any My Book hard drive as a DVR back-up.

I have since purchased a Seagate FreeAgent Pro External 750Gb Hard Drive. It works fine. Playback from the Seagate drive is in distinguishable from playback from the DVR.

WD My Book fine for basic backups

Puntos Fuertes: 3 year warrenty and USB, Firewire, and eSATA connections

Puntos Débiles: No eSATA cable induded and some features do not work with eSATA.

A fine drive for basic backups. The simple and basic backup up software is included and not a 30-day trial as with some. It does not, however, have drive imaging capability. Some day maybe the they'll figure this out that this is a key backup process and should be part of the software. Not to noisy. I can hear it in a quite room a little, but in my office it mostly get lost in the background noise. Not an issue for me. Could be faster to match the capabilities of the connection types.

Nice storage

Puntos Fuertes: A lot of spaces Quick.. no lag at all

Puntos Débiles: Kind of big but not that heavy need to connect extra code for power gets hot sometimes but no problem i guess

This is a nice storage if you just use at home or office. Not recommanded for portable hard drive. Kind of bulky to carry it around. But nice Hard drive. The last one i bought from some other company was terrible. Very slow and shut down a lot. But this is way better. I recommand it.

Okay drive

Puntos Fuertes: Innovative design, quiet

Puntos Débiles: slow to cycle up.

I added two of these as backup drives. They feature a nice industrial design, I especially like the Morse Code messaging in the ventilation holes. The drive is quiet, except that both drives had a tendency to vibrate which was annoying. I had to play around with how they were placed on the credenza to finally stop the vibrations -- one of them actually had to be placed on a napkin because I couldn't get the vibrations to go away no matter how I positioned it. The only other annoying problem is that these drives are crazy slow to cycle up when they are being accessed. Of the eight external drives I use, they are by far the slowest.

Good price for the size

Puntos Fuertes: good size storage, easy to setup, 3 yrs warranty period, quiet.

Puntos Débiles: no power on/off button, no e-sata cable, instructions manual could be better, WD's phone support isn't that great, had to wait for a long time.

The first one that I got was a broken one. I connected it and it powered but won't get detected in my win xp. It took another hour to troubleshoot it but no luck. I connected to another laptop and still won't get detected, decided to return and exchange for another one. This time it worked just out of the box. I reformatted it to NTFS and works just fine. Now, I have a lot more space to store all kinds of files.

Perhaps if you look in back you might find a power button. There is one on mine. For storage it seems to be fine but have not had mine long enough to say if it is good or not. REAL quiet as compared to the MY Book Pro NOISE BOX which I hate.

FYI. There is a "power" button at the back side just above the connector slots. This works for both USB and Firewire ports, but not for eSATA.
