Excellent Drive for Backup

I got this drive to backup all my pictures and videos on windows. It comes with a USB cable, power adaptor and some backup softwares. It's fast and very easy to use and you don't need to install any software provided. The drive is about 2.5 lbs, but it's really not heavy and fits in my bookshelf nicely (since it looks like a book). I like it very much!

Great product for home pc user

I bought this external drive to backup my new imac with Leopard time machine. It works very well: just plug in the cable, and time machine takes it over. Very simple to use, and for everybody who just wants to backup pictures, music, and some home made videos. Great product.

Lots of Storage and Easy to Use

There's not a whole lot to say about the My Book 500GB external drive, which is one of its strengths. You just plug it into your PC's USB port, and the computer will automatically recognize it as a drive (assuming you're using Windows XP or Vista). 500GB is a lot of space (though keep in mind that you're actually getting about 465 gigabytes, because of the difference in how computer memory is calculated as opposed to computer storage).

This drive doesn't have lots of features, such as firewire support or a built-in space indicator. If you're not looking for such frills, then this drive will be more than enough for you. Highly recommended.

Crapped out

Worked fine for a year and a half and then began to have problems (two weeks ago). Currently I'm scrambling to get back lost data; WD fix-it software repaired some lost sectors but it is not reliable. I suspect a mechanical problem that is gradually wiping out sectors (?) I'm not very happy, especially since I read that WD makes very reliable drives. I've had other drives last for five years and more without any problems. WD, of course, cannot help once the HD breaks and the data is lost. I tried Data Recovery software from one of WD's partners but it didn't work. Meanwhile, what kind of HD can I buy that's reliable?

Easy to use external hard drive

This hard drive is perfect for any regular person that is not computer savvy. I just plugged in the harddrive and transfer anything i want to it. Has enough space to store all my pictures and songs to free up my computer.

Ththree units I bought were bought at Amazon UK, and they refered me to the manufacturer for warranty. I did not replace them or repair them since I don't want data to be lost. I switched to other manufacturers.

Hi,

I bought this 500 GB Western Digital external Hard drive from costco. It works for a months or 2 after that it started to give the problem. It won't be reconized and we need to unplug and plug again. some time we need to shutdown the computer. One fine day it stop working and it is asking me to format the hard drive, when I click any folder in the hard drive.

Excellent drive

I have had this drive for almost 2 months and have had no problems at all. It's fast and very quite, can't tell if it's on if not for the cool blue led. It turns itself off if idle for 10 minutes and shuts down when computer shuts down. Overall, I am very happy with this high capacity drive!

I had a few older My Book drives and I recently bought some new drives. This 500GB My Book Essential is really a great drive for the price.

The outside:
It looks smaller than on the picture. The drive is actually pretty shiny. It has a lot of air vents on the top, back and bottom. It has a "clean" shape. No funky or obnoxious look. It's really nice on my desk.

The inside:
I liked that drive because it is totally quiet. No fan. I think it uses some new green power drives so it might help with the electricity bill :) The drive gets barely warm even in use

For backup:
I have one drive to backup a PC laptop. I also connected it my mac and Time Machine automatically recognized it. The drive is connected through the USB port. The backup speed is pretty good for USB. It see about 25MB/s.

I definitely recommend this drive to anyone looking for great value. It's small, quiet, reliable and quite good looking.

Good Product

Puntos Fuertes: Compact Size & weight, stylish, quiet, & easy to use.

Puntos Débiles: FAT32 Format; the software embedded in the hard disk(which is deletable) don't work, no SATA no Firewire.

The product itself is working fine so far. Mine is manufactured in Thailand so thank God it's not manufactured in China or India. I read many reviews about WD My Book that are defective and died quickly (within 6 monthes or even within weeks) and those were made in India. I belive that 'made in Thailand' should be more reliable...

First. lets try this . They force you to install this Google software crap even if U don't want it. Then they force you to install a program called Sync which they want to sell you. Then they make it almost impossible to use the thing - zero instructions. Good luck, i've had it with these crappy drives ( yes, most of them are). i'm going bak to DVD's or a flash drive

I got this drive for $99 on thanksgiving sale. No installation needed, just plug and its there, works on XP and vista like a charm. It's not even heavy, small compare to other 500GB HHDs, fast and noiseless. Better than mac drives.

For what it is (a storage), i see firewire weakness appaerently they want to boot from it, software that come with it is not worth installing not unless you like it, get rid of them its taking up 100MB of space, the case looks kinda weak, i would like to see if the drive can be replaced if it goes out, i havent looked for way to open it yet.

Works perfect so far with my Dell using Windows Xp, super easy to set up and get running. I plan on using this for backing up movies and photos. It requires no plug in to an outlet, just turns on when your computer is turned if it's hooked up via usb. I did reformat this to handle bigger transfers, since fat32 doesn't transfer files larger than 4gb. So far i have no complaints and can recommend this hard drive.

This is great 500GB external hard drive for computer user who needs more space for storing their files. I use it to backup my computer including my files, music, videos and more. The hard drive is very stylish with glossy black coating and it's very light and small for external hard drive. However price is little high compare to other brands but WD is one of the best so I recommend this product.

This hard drive is great! Works great with Windows XP and also on my new laptop with Vista. It is fast and easy to transfer files to and from. I'm planning to store movies, music and pictures on this drive.
I would buy it again and recommend it to friends.
