Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Rarely have I been so absorbed into a horror film, which although not scary per se, was certainly unique and made me a little nervous walking through the dark in fear of weird old men/attractive young women/police detectives jumping out at me in pig masks. This film was unique in the creation of a brilliant yet awful mind (namely John "Jigsaw" Kramer) and has many innovative yet often psychologically cruel creations to inflict pain and possible death. The film was novel in its concept and in Jigsaw's desire to 'test' people's will to live and have them come out with a better attitude towards their life, which they were perhaps apathetic towards originally. I didn't see the twist at the end coming whatsoever, and was left amazed at some of the developments of this brilliant plot. Sadly, now the element of surprise and suspense has been taken out of it after the identification of Jigsaw as John 'the corpse' Kramer, I can't imagine any of the sequels being quite as good...

I did not see it and do not plan to see it. It sounds like a sick movie. I know a lot of people like this sort of thing, but I just don't get it... slasher, people being sawed or cut or killed. I have seen a lot in my job and do not wish to see the Hollywood version.

Kinda Strange

Johnny Depp is kinda weird in this movie and I don't think that it's a great movie in my opinion. This is a very strange cast for a movie with such hype surrounding Johnny Depp and why can't it be like the book which I have read several times.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Interesting remake but to me as good as Johnny Depp was, Gene Wilder will always be Willy Wonka. They hipped the oompas (sp) up a little and only used one guy to play them all! You see the darker side of Wonka and his childhood in this version and it was good, but I will always like the origanal better.

Have some of these people actually read Charlie and the chocolate factory? Willy Wonka is a weirdo, the book is a dark fairy tale for goodness sake. Johnny Depp's version is far nearer the original than Gene Wilder's, the description of Willy Wonka in the book also fits the Johnny Depp version more accurately and in my opinion is an improvement. Johnny always does things his way, he does not copy anyone else, and no one does weird better than Johnny.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Now that ive seen the second one this one is not good as i use to think it was. This movie is not scary by anymeans it seems like it wasnt meant to be but this movie has a nice storyline and keeps you watching so you can find out what happens next. I just thought it was crazy when i found out that the jigsaw guy tricks people into killing them thats brilliant and different from any other thriller movie. But the first one is way better almost makes this one look bad. I would defiantly recommond this one to people though.

I found it very interesting, because of the psychology involved, but, I hear the second one has a much better concept. I'll be seeing that one soon. I like movies that keep me trying to understand the mind of the perpetrator. Maybe it didn't scare me all that much but it did keep me thinking. I think it was good.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Hugely disappointing on most every level - it simply doesn't hold a candle to the original 1971 film. Even the Oompah Loompahs were clearly technological imposters, so much so, that even a child could tell. The music was anywhere from bland to painful. And Johnny Depp, let's not even talk about him ok? Yes he was THAT bad, even creepy. So what was the point of re-making this movie once again..oh yeah, money. As a fan of Tim Burton's, all I can do is shake my head on this one.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

First of all, I am a major fan of Gene Wilder. So I wasn't any too thrilled with the idea of someone else stepping into this character. In fact, I didn't really see how it could be done. Enter Johnny Depp in all is delightful off the wall oddness and I had no more questions. Brillant casting choice by Tim Burton - who was himself probably the only guy today who could do the subject matter any screen justice to begin with. His next great move was presenting Willy Wonka's back story oppossed to simply rehashing a film that is, in most people's memory, a classic. May possibly be one of the most effective remakes of all time.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

With the recent rash of poor remakes, I went into this not expecting too much. I was very surprised. Johnny Depp took the role and made it his own. It was a great film, a worthy successor to the original. While Gene Wilder played the role his way and did a remarkable job, Depp's interpetation is outstanding. I was prepared to hate this movie, but you just can't. It's great. It follows to original storyline of the book better, although the sequence of Willy's younger life is a great addition.

This movie was crazy! Yeah, it was a remake but it was different. It seemed more like a spoof instead of trying to live up to the first one and simply mimicking its style. I thought it was great. Plus they give some background on Wanka....silly background but a background nonetheless.

I love how we as the viewers get to look into two different lives instead just the Bucket's. I'm sure we all wanted to know what made Wonka as childlike as he was. I enjoyed being able to see what Wonka's family life was like. Along with the nuttiness of the movie, it provided a darker side to it as well.

Saw this a few months ago. Good movie. Freddie Highmore is good as Charlie. and Johnny Depp is also good as Willy Wonka. this version is darker.the only singing is by the Oompa Loompas {played by only one actor} so it is not really a musical. this one sticks closer to the book. It also goes and shows Willies life as a kid. and how is dad was a strict dentist. and how Willy took an interest in candy and candy making. good acting.this one can be a bit scarier for smaller children. has some funny parts. we saw it on Imax although don't know why it was NOT in 3d and the only difference was everything was just bigger. we could have had just as nice a version on the regular screen.

This actually wasn't as good as I thought it would be. It was definetely aimed at a young audience, but being 15, it kind of seemed weird to me. I love Johnny Depp, and that was one of the main reasons I went to see it (that, and the fact that it was the only movie suitable enough to take my younger brother too). I definetely like the older version better, it was more believable. Johnny Depp was good, but he kind of creeped me out a bit. He was a bit too neurotic, and it was way over dramaticly acted.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Johnny Depp was excellent in this movie. I grew up loving Willy Wonka, it was and still is my favorite all time movie. I expected to be disappointed by the remake, but was surprised when I truly enjoyed the movie. Though, I do see where people like Anna find some of the references to the children and such, rude and cruel. But, honestly, that was not really the focus for me or my children when watching it. I think most children will be driven to see the fantasy of living in a world of chocolate...I mean really, who wouldnt want to be own a chocolate factory??

I may be prejudicial here, since I love Johnny Depp! He is so quirky and odd in this movie... ( isn't he usually though?)that makes it worth watching. It basically is the typical Willy Wonka story, but done with a few twists and lots better special effects, though I do not mean to dis the original Gene Wilder comedy in any way! It's pretty good for light fare and or family watching!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Wonderously delicious! Something for everyone. Kids will love the visuals and the fantasy-like storytelling. Adults will love the cultural in-jokes, dark humor and Johnny Depp's hilarious deadpan delivery. I adore the Oompa Loompas (all played by the same actor) and how they pop up in different settings and costumes throughout. Their musical numbers are funny and over-the-top, especially the Esther-Williams takeoff and the heavy metal band. Freddie Highmore is a perfect choice to play Charlie Bucket, full of wide-eyed innocence and grace, a perfect foil for the charicatured kids that embody a variety of social and moral ills. Director Tim Burton is a master of creepy/cartoony scenery and this film is one of his best ever.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I just took my granddaughter and youngest son(13 yrs) to see this movie, the granddaughter was bored and wanted to sleep, in spite of the fact she already had her nap. My son did not like it too much, but I thought it was a pretty good remake. Depp's character was a lot more detailed than Wilder's and as for making a mockery of fat kids, no that wasn't the point. Actually up until around the 80s or so, all kids were treated poorly *to be seen and not heard* so the way the kids were treated by Willy Wonka was realistic of that era. Not to mention he was emotionally disturbed (obviously) and did not like any person, adult and child alike. I am glad this remake was made, it really did give you an insight as to Wonka's mind, where as the other did not.

A mentally ill creep passes judgement on children in this creepy movie. The fat kid is despised and reviled simply for enjoying chocolate. He never even gets a chance to show his personality because he's the first to go. The singers call him disgusting and repulsive. No wonder fat kids at school have double the rate of suicide attempts! Why is it ok to hurt fat kids?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

It's the Chocolate Factory only as Tim Burton could make it. I haven't read the book, and I've seen the original movie a million times; it's really hard not to make comparisons. But, as a movie in and of itself, Burton's vision of this story is a reflection of his dark yet whimsical, semi-nightmarish world. Which, well, does work to bring out a whole new dimension to this movie. Most of us know the story: One factory. Five shiny tickets. Five kids. One eccentric candyman. But, if you're expecting to see a revamp of the charming story starring Gene Wilder, you'll be disappointed. This is something entirely different. POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD: Depp's version of Wonka is very . . . well, "Michael-Jackson-esque". It's a very interesting interpretation of the character; where the original movie kept Willy Wonka fairly one-dimensional, Burton's version delves deep into the psyche of Wonka and his child-like tendencies. It's Charlie who is a flawless, one-dimensional character in this version. Interesting take on the familiar story. Overall, worth watching, but it should in no way be seen as a replacement for the original.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I expect every decent movie of the past is going to one day get a remake. We'll be seeing remakes of Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, and Rocky anytime soon. No surprise that Willie Wonka was due for a remake. I saw the Gene Wilder version of Willie Wonka with my kids. It was good and this souped up version with Johnny Depp is also good. Depp does a great job. In Pirates of the Carribean, he supposedly modeled his characer after Keith Richards. It seems pretty obvious what pop icon (who was in the news of late) Depp is modeling this time (he even wore gloves). Comparisons to the old movie are mandatory, I would say that Jack Albertson did a better job than the old dude playing the grandad in this version. I also liked the old-version Oompa-Loompas -- the ones in this movie were kind of creepy. I also liked the songs in the old version as each rotten kid gets dispatched. In the final analysis, Roald Dahl's outstanding story is hard to screw up.

Why I went to see this movie is beyond me, but I thought it was good. The music was the best orchestral performance I have ever heard in ANY movie. I also liked how the movie is set in modern time. I would have rather seen Nicholas Cage playing the dark, spooky Wonka maniac role, but Johnny Depp wasn't that bad. He played the part well, except his hairdo made him look like he had just been on The Real Roseanne Show. Depp also acted silly when I was hoping for a more Gene Wilder seriousness. I thought it was stupid to call the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I can't get myself to call it that. I just say Willy Wonka, like every other person in the world who saw the first movie called it for years.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I had very high expectations for this film based on not only the hype, but everyone I knew saying it was this great horror film. To me, that's an insult to the genre. The only thing I give it credit for was it's advertising. It was a low budget film that did very well. It was a suspense film only to the extent that it kept you waiting for the suspense...but it never comes! The acting hurt this movie severely, horror movies just don't work with terrible acting. And as for that "plot twist" at the end, well, let me just say that for anyone who's seen Silence of the Lambs, I wasn't shocked in the least. Stop reading here if you really want to see this movie without knowing the ending. Let's think about it. What exactly would the purpose be of having a dead guy laying in the middle of the floor throughout the entire movie. Why is he there? There's not point unless...*gasp*...he's not really dead! Tricky tricky. And not that I like excess gore, but to credit yourself as being this terribly twisted movie, a few almost shots of a guy sawing his leg off and the aftermath of that jawbreaker thing that didn't do much...come on. I give this movie a big LAME for being so disappointing.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This film tries to be scary in a disturbing kind of a way, rather than a "Pop-up-and-say-boo" kind of way, and for that I commend them. However, the cinematography in this movie is horrible! The acting was subpar, and there were more flashbacks than Forrest Gump. I did like their idea for the film (although it was not original at all) that the killer always finds ways for victims to kill themselves, which isn't true in a couple of scenes (like taking a homemade "jawbreaker" off your head in a time limit; that's murdering!). Also, this film, and their critics, say that this is one of the goriest films ever. Don't make me laugh. There's hardly any gore at all, a couple of scenes with blood, and some afterimages of dead people, but that's it. And don't expect to be scared either... The Ring was scarier than this movie, and that's saying a lot. Don't bother.

Whoever thought up this movie was very twisted. People are killed in unimaginably disguisting ways, and the ending is a big disappointment. There are WAY TOO MANY FLASHBACKS, and you never know when things are taking place. The ending leaves you wondering way too much and you don't know the fate of all but one of the major charecters! all in all, if you are really curiouse and want to see the movie, i would suggest waiting until it comes out on video/dvd. DON'T WASTE MONEY ON GOING TO THE MOVE THEATERS, AT LEAST NOT ON THIS MOVIE. GOD KNOWS HOW EXPENSIVE EVERYTHING IS IN THEATRES NOW!

Definately worth watching. It's not so much of a "horror" flick so much as it is a psychological* suspense kind of film (so don't go expecting to be scared, you'll be disappointed). Two men wake up to find themselves chained in a room, while a voyeuristic psycho watches as they try to find a way to win his disturbing game. Nice twist to the ending, Cary Elwes gives a fantastic performance. Only difficulty in the movie is to make sure you keep up with the multiple time lines, but so long as you pay attention you can keep up. (*edited for spelling)
