Cold Mountain [DVD] [2004] [1 disc] [Region 1]Cold Mountain is definitely a worthwhile movie. The early scene showing the battle scene during the Siege of Petersburg was truly excellent in execution. But this movie does not revert to a 2.5 hour Civil War Reenactment (which Gods and Generals did with disasterous consequences -- Ladies don't want to watch Civil War reenactments). However, the story is actually a depiction of [quite austere and sometimes brutal] life on the Confederate homefront in North Carolina. There is also a love story, a very poignant one; but, I am not here to give away the movie. The movie is brilliantly acted. Though some have criticized Renee Zellweger's Oscar-winning performance as an over-the-top impersonation of Irene Ryan (Granny on Beverly Hillbillys) as a 30-something, I liked the fact that Zellweger played a rough and tumble character rather than her typical portrayal of doughy little girls in love. Even Nicole Kidman flexes some muscles here. Two actors whom I loved in Talented Mr. Ripley, Jude Law and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, are great in this movie as well. Everything about the movie was great: acting, soundtrack, and cinematography. My one (actually my wife's) gripe (one-star penalty assessed) is that the ending was so predictable that when it happened, it kind of left you flat. I had heard some criticism that the supporting characters were more dynamic than Ada and Inman, but to be fair, Ada and Inman are reserved and introverted people. I had also heard that the Southern accents were not that good, but I did not think they were really that bad. Jude Law portrayed Inman as a strong but silent type, who will stop at nothing to be reunited with his sweetheart. What woman wouldn't want a lover as devoted and romantic as Inman? Nicole Kidman did not stretch herself as she did in "The Hours". Ada came off as a bit too delicate and ephemeral, but perhaps we were seeing her through Inman's eyes, whose perception of his ladylove was very idealized. Renee Zellweger chewed the scenery as the capable Ruby, who helped Ada revitalize her farm and avoid starvation. Philip Seymour Hoffman was masterful as the lecherous preacher, and I believe if he had had a few more scenes he would have been nominated for a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor award. I imagine we are going to see a lot more of this gifted character actor. I agree with previous reviewers that the cinematography was gorgeous;although "Cold Mountain" was filmed in Romania, that pristine, mountainous country looks like North Carolina. Finally, I am glad I chose "Cold Mountain" as a birthday present for myself; it makes an excellent addition to my growing DVD collection. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Cold Mountain [DVD] [2004] [1 disc] [Region 1]I honestly thought this movie was fantastic. Yes, it was long but it was well-worth it. A beautiful love story set during the Civil War, it had terrific acting from Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Renee Zellweger. Stunning cinematography, it kept my eyes glued on the screen. It also had a surprisingly good supporting cast with Natalie Portman and Giovanni Ribisi among others. Well-written and lovingly directed, coupled with a gorgeous, haunting soundtrack makes it a not to miss film in my opinion. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Cold Mountain [DVD] [2004] [1 disc] [Region 1]"Cold Mountain" had good acting (of course, what more could we expect from Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellwegger and Jude Law?) but it was a bit on the long side. It was portrayed as more of a war story in the commercials, but it soon became obvious that the story was more of a mushy romance, so most of the men in the theater were squirming in their seats half an hour through. It had a sad ending that I didn't expect and was a bit disappointed by . . . otherwise, good film with a fantastic cast and haunting soundtrack. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

I didn't even notice how long the film was till I read all the complaints in reviews. Didn't seem nearly as long as Lord of the Rings. The plot, the actresses, eh. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

You can tell the story was taken from a well written book and instead of being true to the book it was completely "hollywood-ised", where half-way through we were seeing the whose who of hollywood which completely detracted from the movie. Nicole Kidman is a good actress, but this movie failed to stretch her ability or show any of her growing potential like "The Hours" or "The Others". The accents were awful, if your getting paid $15 million for a movie the least you could do is show some respect to the audiences intelligence and do a convincing southern accent. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Cold Mountain [DVD] [2004] [1 disc] [Region 1]A 4.5. A very good movie takes place at the civil war. Nicole Kidman is good as Ada, the woman caught up in the war who tells Inman her boyfriend to come back to her. There is really two story lines. Ada and Ruby the farmgirl who helps her tend the land{Renee Zellweger is great in this part} and Inman who spends a year walking back to Ada and the people he encounters. This can be a pretty violent movie considering it is about war. Well done and acted though. A bit longer than I like, but good movie. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

I enjoyed seeing what Inman had to go through to get home to Ada it was interesting all the people he encounters on the way. It was so slow to start out with, but thankfully Renee Zellweger showed up to inject some life into it. Even though I'm not a fan of Renee Zellwegger I thought she did really good on her role. Even though I think Nicole Kidman totally pops, I don't think she should win Best Actress because there wasn't much "intelligent/incredible" acting she could of done in that movie. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil?
