Enemy at the GatesSo close to perfect. It is so unique. Not many movies about snipers can be seen in stores. Rachel Weiss, Jude Law, and Ed Harris were fantastic. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Enemy at the GatesI am a big fan of war movies and sniper stories,so I am subjective on this one.The 4-th star is for the subjectivity.Production and settings-great.Acting-great.Casting-great(ed harris and bob hoskins are among my favorite actors).A lot of criticism went to the love scene, but I thought it is good taste and realistic.the screenplay-average,historical inaccuracies are there, and there are elements which are clearly ment to "sell" the movie(Hollywood crap).I didnt mind so much that major Koenig didnt exist, cuz i that one is allowed to play with history a bit (if it wasnt, it would suffice to watch Discovery, you would not need a film)but what really bothered me were dialogues intended to artificially inform the audience what the action is about(you know what I mean-characters explaining stuff to other characters which was already OBVIOUS). I guess it is really hard to make very good war or other type of movies in Hollywood these days, because of the commercial constraints.Overall, a great effort,it is one of those films that I would watch many times. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Enemy at the GatesGets high marks for production value and acting. The movie was tedious at times and included some material not necessary to the overall story. Ed Harris and Jude Law are extremely good but one thing that really annoyed me was the voicework. If I closed my eyes it sounded like the British were defending Stalingrad and not the Soviets. Nearly all of the main characters sounded british. A small concern but given the overall effort on production I am surprised they allowed this to occur. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Enemy at the GatesOut of the abounding war flicks out there, this one stands out to me because it tells a rarely told story. Focusing on the Battle of Stalingrad, it deals with one of the most important battles of the war, one often overlooked and never dealt with in Hollywood. While it is a little slow-paced, it's certainly intriguing. They did a terrific job recreating the horrific, bloody battles and the crumbling city of Stalingrad. Jude Law owns the screen in his performance of the shepherd turned sniper hero. Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz and Ed Harris round out a top-notch cast. A great historical film. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Enemy at the GatesNot for everyone, but this is a great film. It takes place during World War II and is about 2 snipers, on opposite sides, who play a cat and mouse game trying to kill each other. But that's not the whole movie. There are some nice war sequnces as well as a couple of sub-plots. Jude Law and Ed Harris top the cast list as the 2 snipers. Great performances, and an excellent film. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Enemy at the GatesYeah, it's a little slow going, but it's a SNIPER movie, so that's to be expected. It brings up topics of WWII that weren't really talked about in school as much. Well-made, good acting, excellent settings, overall quite decent. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Enemy at the GatesIMHO so far it's the best movie I've seen in cinemas in the year 2001. True that it hasn't been a great year, but true also that this is a good film. Good storyline, good script, wonderful acting (Jude Law and Ed Harris), good score. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Enemy at the Gatesleave it to hollywood to throw in a stupid love triangle and gratuitous love scene. wiggum's comments are interesting. i mean i don't know what makes hollywood think they're better writers than history. a lot of the better movies stick strictly to the facts or strictly to the original book they're trying to show to movie goers. other than that i think ed harris and jude law did a good job and the sets and effects (in the opening scenes especially) were stunning. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Enemy at the GatesThis movie is quite tedious. It just won't end, eventhough the end can be forseen about an hour ahead of time. The enormous battle scenes aren't quite as enormous as were hoped because they are blocked out by smoke or taken from the wrong angle. Basically, the director wanted the scene's to look huge, but didn't have the money. The story was too predictable, and probably appeals to women more than men, but the blood doesn't help the woman's perspective. The villian's character is far too underdeveloped, and the members of the love triangle are as well. Perhaps some important scenes were left on the cutting room floor. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Enemy at the GatesWar action movie with a real weak story line, it was not until the end of the movie that I found out this was based on a true incident that happened at the battle of Stalingrad, I guess that excuses the lame story and makes it all right. The sets are awsome and very real, what is NOT real is the way overloud music, it's just too much to listen to the noise of battle and have that damn music blasting away at you, take my tip get ear plugs. It spoils the otherwise real battle scenes and gives you a headacheThe movie fails to get in the head of either sniper, fails as a history lesson, fails as a love story, dunno what it succeeds at really. All in all a very shallow effort that will probably do very well at the box office. If ya got anything better to do however, go do it, you won't miss not seeing this movie at all. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Enemy at the GatesOver the past five or so years, I've been reading a lot about World War II, so I was excited when I saw the first previews for "Enemy at the Gates." When most Americans think of important WW2 battles, they tend to think of D-Day or the Battle of the Bulge. But most historians argue that the 1942-3 fight for Stalingrad - the setting for "Enemy at the Gates - was the war's most significant battle. It marked the first major defeat for the Germans, and it is recognized at the turning point of the war. Conventional wisdom at the time gave the Russians almost no chance of resisting the German invasion, but - starting at Stalingrad - operation Barbarossa turned out to be a disaster for Hitler's forces. The Stalingrad fighting was some of the most horrific and brutal of the war. Soldiers on both sides were exposed to extreme temperatures, life-threatening shortages of food and clothing, and near-constant street-fighting among the bombed-out ruins of the city. I really looked forward to seeing how well Hollywood could portray such an epic battle. As it turns out, "Enemy at the Gates" does an impressive job of re-creating the fighting in the war-torn city. The first 15-20 minutes of the movie track a young peasant soldier, Vassili Zaitsev, as he travels by train to the city, across the Volga river (as German planes bomb the transport barges), and into the front lines as the charging Russians are decimated by German machine-gun fire (and as the Russians who turn and run are shot by their own political officers). But I'm being generous by giving "Enemy at the Gates" four stars, because the movie goes downhill after the initial battle scenes. The movie glosses over Zaitsev's transformation into a highly successful sharp-shooter and celebrated Russian hero, then dives right into the predictable battle between Zaitsev and a German sniper sent to kill him. The other plot line is a lame love triangle involving Zaitsev, another soldier (played by Rachel Weisz, who is beautiful), and a political officer (played by Joseph Fiennes). The movie is based on real characters and events, which makes it much more interesting. But Hollywood, of course, takes quite a few liberties with the facts. Zaitsev and Tanya (the character played by Weisz) did exist and did have an affair, but I'm pretty sure the character played by Fiennes is fictional, and the battle between Zaitsev and the German sniper didn't play out the way it does in the movie. Still, if you're interested in WW2, this is a four-star movie. If history doesn't do much for you, go see a war movie with a better plot. ¿Te ha parecido útil o inútil? Tope

Enemy at the Gates
Atmospheric and thrilling, Enemy at the Gates gets the look and feel of war right. However, the love story seems out of place. Tope |
Enemy at the Gates
Okay, so maybe the love triangle was a little contrived and annoying, but overall this was a good movie. I thought Jude Law and Ed Harris were especially good in their respective roles. The story of a Russian sniper was particularly interesting to me, as was the terror and insanity of the Battle of Stalingrad. If you ever get a chance to play the Russian part of the game "Call of Duty" you can see how the game was modeled after this movie -- everything from the dangerous river crossing to the rationing of ammo to the shooting of those who turned back is in there.
