Back to Basics Apple/Potato Peeler w Suction Base

Puntos Fuertes: Good, versatile product. Suction cup easier to use than the type that you have to screw onto a table or counter.

Puntos Débiles: None although it helps to wet counter top to get a good grip.

This is an easy way to quickly peel apples or potatoes. I had the type you screw onto a counter or table. My daughter was using it and accidentally messed up a table. I bough her the A505 with the suction cup which is much more counter/table friendly. Next time you go to a fair look and see if the latest new food item isn't the french fried potato spirals. Guess how they made them? Yep, the potato peeler. Best used on firm apples, adjustments are easy. Direction book easy to follow and contains some recipes.

Back to Basics Apple/Potato Peeler

Puntos Fuertes: Efficient, fast, easy to use. Good suction.

Puntos Débiles: Not perfect on bumpy potatoes.

Potatoes don't peel as well as apples because they have a bumpy surface and the peeler can't hit every nook and cranny. Cores and slices very well and is easy on your hand (doesn't require a lot of pressure). Definitely DO NOT use soft apples or potatoes; they will slip off center and won't peel or core properly. This gadget will save me a lot of time because I will be baking a lot of apple pies and I'm not very fast at peeling by hand.

Back to Basics Pelador de Manzanas/Papas c/Base de...

Puntos Fuertes: Great product. We've had one for 10 years and just bought another for a family member.

Puntos Débiles: None

I purchased our original Apple Corer over 10 years ago and it's still going strong. A family member saw ours and really like it, so we found it on the web and ordered another one for them. It's a great way to get kids to each apples, instead of candy. They love to help turn the handle and they love how it comes out looking like a 'slinky'. A little peanut butter and you've got a great snack.

Back To Basics Apple / Potato Peeler w Suction Base...

Puntos Fuertes: Pretty solid piece-has stainless steel, cast iron and chrome in the body and a wooden handle-no plastic that I know of. Very easy to operate once you get the hang of it. Base allows easy mounting.

Puntos Débiles: none

I bought this apple peeler after an hour or two of on-line comparison shopping. I decided on the suction base model because I didn't want the hassle of the clamp model. (I've used one before and you had to be careful not to damage whatever it was that you're clamping the peeler to and you were a little constrained in your choice of location-edges only). When I first set it up, my husband was a little skeptical of the suction base, but we had no problems with it and it held its own. The first thing I tried to peel was a potato which, due to the way I mounted it (I hadn't read the instructions yet), turned out pretty bad. I moved on to apples and did about 50 apples for drying for Christmas gifts and after the first 3 or 4 everything went very smoothly and very quickly. The peeler is so easy to use that I would mount the apples and my 3 year old would peel them.
I did learn a few things, so here they are:
The mounting surface must be clean and mostly dry
Don't do soft apples-The first couple of apples I did (they were Rome apples) got torn up by the peeler because they were too soft, so I refrigerated all the apples and after they were chilled, they did fine (for the most part).
The peeler works better if you do the peeling quickly-if you go too slowly, or stop and start, the blade gets a little finicky.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the peeler, it was inexpensive, easy to operate, and easy to clean. No problems here.

Apple/Peeler with Suction Base A505

Puntos Fuertes: Peels and cores and slices like a dream. I've had one for about 15 years and do large volumes of apples at a time. Study tool. "U" blade can be ordered and replaced easily.

Puntos Débiles: It will peel bruised or older wilted apples less effectively. But can one really call that a weakness. It isn't as easy to peel a wilted apple with a knife too.

For the person that said the suction cup didn't work after a few times... make sure that you don't get oil on the cup. It makes sense to keep the cup absolutely clean. Wash, rinse, and dry well. The suction cup can let go from time to time, especially if an apple is a bit stubborn. But the cup can easily be reset. Keep the surface under the cup clean. If you are making a bunch of pies in a day... or drying apples.... the job goes quickly. Even if the apple is speared crooked, it isn't too difficult to touch up the apple slices and remove core that has been missed. I love this very useful and sturdy little machine. I also have the one that you screw to a counter or table. ALWAYS remember to either place a small thin board or sturdy material under the top and bottom of the clamp to protect the counter or table.

Suction cup fails after washing device

Puntos Fuertes: Makes peeling apples a snap

Puntos Débiles: Doesn't peel bruised apples or mealy apples as well as firm ripe apples. Removes uneven amounts of apple peel and digs a bit too much apple from the fruit (about half a pinky nail in depth) from fruit

Bought this since I frequently make baked goods with apples. I washed it and let it air dry. After about the 3rd wash, the suction cup stopped providing suction and connection to the countertop so it became worthless. Great concept but not designed for long term use.

Great apple/potato peeler

Puntos Fuertes: Sturdy cast-iron material; peels, cores and slices all at once; suction base very stable and better than a clamp

Puntos Débiles: None. Just takes a few attempts to set the peeling blade properly.

My mom owned an apple peeler with the clamp for about 20 years. It did not peel potatoes, though. That model was inconvenient due to needing a thin counter top to clamp onto. Plus, the juice would run onto the floor. I found my mom this A505 suction model for about $22. Like the other model, this is made of cast iron, so it's very sturdy. The A505 will peel, core and slice the apple all at once. As others have mentioned, best results occur when:
1. The apples are firm.
2. It takes a few attempts to set the peeling blade properly. You don't want to remove too much "meat", but you have to remove enough to get all the peel.
3. Peel each end of the apple by hand before you put it on the machine. That way you don't waste a lot of apple.
4. Place a thin pan under the peeler to catch the juice and the peel.
This apple/potato peeler is well worth the money, because it will last a lifetime. It's great for making dehydrated apple slices, apple pie, and apple sauce.
